Remember when…

As a West Indian child all you really cared about was if these staples were in the cupboard!

A Tale of Porridges

As most West Indian children, I grew up eating porridge - the breakfast of champions . It was a staple in our household for breakfasts and dinners. When nostalgia sets in or sheer laziness, these filling bowls of goodness never fail. My mother and grandmother made the best porridges ever! The line ups at our house were usually cassava, cornmeal, sago, cream of wheat, oatmeal and plain flour porridge.

My grandmother usually tried to jazz it up from time to time with the addition of pumpkin or a root vegetable.  And still to this day my favorites are still oats, cornmeal, cassava and cream of wheat. Had Goldilocks  visited our house she would have been sorely disappointed as there was never a drop left.

Naughty Tasting…

The Naughty Grape..*giggles*…it’s just that with a name like that you can’t help yourself, it’s such an intriguing and fun name ( hey..just blame the inner kid ..ok).

A couple Fridays ago I made my way to the Naughty Grape compound on Tragarete Rd, where they hosted their free wine tasting event. It was actually my first time attending as I’ve made several mental notes to attend each one they’ve hosted previously but never got around to it. But finally I did, and while there weren’t any pairings involved this time around, it was a pretty decent affair.

Knowledgeable staff were quite eager to share tips on what each wine is best paired with and how it’s best served.

First sampling of Escudo Rojo 2008 ( Chilean) & Trivento Malbec ( Argentine). While I enjoyed the robust, not too dry flavor of the Escudo Rojo, I was pleasantly surprised with the full bodied flavour of the Malbec. For those of you who love sweet reds(like me) this one is for you. That table was indeed visited more than once :)

I then shashayed over to another table to sample their offerings.

Frontera Sauvignon Blanc (Chilean) -fresh,fruity and had a light taste. Not overly impressed by it though, but it was pretty decent.

Lindeman’s Semillion Chardonnay was absolutely my least favorite.

Veuve Paul Bur Brut -a lovely vibrant, fruity sparkler. This champagne blend was another favorite for the evening.A budget friendly pickup when entertaining.

Cross section of wines, rums, cocktail mixes & other gifts at the Naughty Grape.

All in all a lovely evening was spent gaining knowledge on the wines and chit chatting with familiar faces that I happened to meet there as well.Looking forward to the next one.
